Windblown: New Roguelike from Dead Cells Creators Motion Twin

Windblown:

Most anticipated Roguelike 2024

If you’re a fan of the roguelite genre, then Windblown has a good chance to be your next obsession for 2024 and likely for many years to come with the post launch support that we have seen from this studio.

What is Windblown?

Windblown is an isometric, action roguelite that is playable in solo or up to three players with a vibrant art style that features layered environments and each run is filled with secrets to uncover. Windblown has tough, but fair combat that will find you blazing through levels and swapping between multiple weapons and shifting builds on the fly, which sounds similar to the gameplay loop of Dead Cells.

In Windblown, you play as a leaper fighting to protect its home, The Ark, from the gigantic and deadly Vortex and its sentinel minions. Leapers absorb memories of those who came before, so you won’t be playing the same character who gets turned into goop every time, which sounds along the lines of Rogue Legacy. As you collect more memories, you will become stronger and be able to wield more complex weapons and powers.

Why Windblown is our Most Anticipated Roguelike 2024

The reason as to why Windblown is likely going to be amazing is because its being developed by Motion Twin and if you are unfamiliar, this is the nine person indie studio from France that created Dead Cells.

If you Google “Best Indie Games Of All Time”, Dead Cells appears very high on every list. You can also Google “Best Roguelite of All Time” and Dead Cells appears even higher on every list. Dead Cells has an overwhelmingly positive score of 97% on Steam with almost 125k reviews. When you realize that the small indie studio from France that has made one of the best roguelites of all time and one of the best indie games of all time are making another game, its certainly a reason to get very excited.

DEAD CELLS creators NEXT GAME

Dead Cells was an action first roguelite that was built on tight controls and satisfying combat. Motion Twin has already tackled 2D action platformer and now with Windblown, Motion Twin will attempt to infuse their magic into the popular 3D isometric dungeon crawling genre.

According to Motion Twin “ We were craving a lightning fast combat roguelite, but it simply didn’t exist. We rolled up our sleeves and crafted the game we yearned for”

Hearing this statement is somewhat shocking because both Dead Cells and Hades both feature extremely fast combat, so it will be interesting to see how they turn the speed knob up on Windblown.

According to the studio, they are planning for a minimum of one year in early access, which is in line with what happened with Dead Cells. Even the early access launch seem to have plenty of content. Windblown will debut with 5 biomes, 4 main weapons and will be fully playable with 1, 2 or 3 players.

Windblown 2024

There are still plenty of lingering questions leading up to the games release including why Motion Twin didn’t self publish Windblown like they did Dead Cells. This time around it is being co published by the studio and Kepler Interactive, a publishing company built on the same co-op ideals as Motion Twin.

Even though Hades 2 is also supposed to be release in 2024, Windblown will still take our top spot for most anticipated roguelite of 2024 because it looks like an evolution of what the studio created with Dead Cells. Windblown takes the fast and satisfying combat of Dead Cells and infuses into a new art style that looks to have plenty of fresh ideas. Hades 2 looks like more of the same, which is a great thing, but I always returned to Dead Cells, once I finished Hades that was it.
