Mewgenics Beginner Tips and Tricks

Mewgenics does feature a short tutorial, which is be helpful, but due to the absurd amount of content including 281 achievements, double digit classes, thousands of unique abilities, thousands of items and hundreds of enemies, it’s safe to say you can use all the help you can get, so here are fourteen tips and tricks to help improve your starting foundation:

Mewgenics Tips and Tricks

TIP 1 - Try to Attack the Back

Mewgenics quickly tells you this, but don’t underestimate how important it is to attack from the back, as it will deal drastically more damage. Try pairing these attacks with a critical hit passive or don’t underestimate the value of the ability that makes enemies turn away from you.

TIP 2 - Always Face The Right Direction

Speaking of doing damage to enemies from behind, the enemies will do more damage to you, so try to remember at the very end of your turn to click the on the side of the cat that you want them to face. This can be a big difference if you can guess the right way the enemy will be attacking from. Taking 5 damage instead of 10 is a big difference.

TIP 3 - Less is More

You don’t always need to take four cats on an excursion. This might sound counterintuitive, but taking three cats will allow them to level up quicker since you don’t have to divy out post battle upgrades amongst four cats. It will definitely make each run harder, but if you take the hard path options, you might have to strong breeding potential.

TIP 4 - Prioritize Birds

Some battles will have a pigeon, chicken or random small bird on the map, consider prioritizing them as they will greatly reward you with an item and will fly away after just a few rounds.

TIP 5 - Grass

One of the most common tiles is the grass tile. Whenever possible get your cat in some grass because it gives them a 50% chance to dodge. However, not all tiles have long grass, for the tiles with grass sprouts, get some water on those tiles to help the grass grow into proper cover. You can do this by walking your cat through water first, or even spitting a wet hairball at the empty tile.

TIP 6 - Use The Environment

The fifth member of your platoon is the elements and you need to embrace them whenever possible. If a lot of enemies are in water, use some form of electricity to shock and damage all of them. If an enemy is burning don’t use water or if you are on fire, get in some water or is some cases it might be smarter to use a wet hairball on yourself to stop the burn damage. If an enemy wont stop hiding in the grass, burn them out, or even preemptively burn all the grass on the map. Mewgenics really lets you get creative so constantly be on the lookout for ways to utilize the environmental aspects of the game.

TIP 7 - Making Sacrifices

You can create an army of minions with the right abilities and passives, but until you get there, maggots, flies and other small familials might just seem weak, but they can be extremely powerful. Most of the time you have control over where they come onto the battlefield, so use them as sacrificial lambs. They can be used to trigger traps that would hurt your cats or they can also be positioned well to hopefully draw the enemies aggro, tank damage and waste their turn.

TIP 8 - Tactical View

The battlefield in Mewgenics can become quite hectic when combine your platoon with the enemy forces and then add in all of the environmental items, body parts, traps, pickups and familials. To get a better perspective, switch to the tactical view for a second. On Steam Deck, you can do this by holding Y. This can come in handy to spot the little enemies hiding in a bush or behind something. Checking out the tactical view will also sometimes reveal if there is money or food within some rocks and garbage. If you’re badly in need of healing, this could be the difference.

TIP 9 - Wet Hairballs

Wet hairballs are more valuable than you think. They might seem like a basic attack, but when you use it to the fullest, it can be quite handy. You can put out fire from range, which is helpful on bosses who throw bombs. It also can be used to push back enemies into environmental hazards and whatnot.

TIP 10 - Cut Your Losses Quick

You get new cats either by breeding or attracting strays, but don’t be afraid to cut your losses quickly if the new kitten or stray doesn’t have a good starting skill-set. If there isn’t anything good about the cat, they likely wont be what you need to succeed in battle and they’re just going to eat your valuable food

TIP 11 - Turn Order

Like all tactics, there is a turn order, which is on display in the top right hand of the screen. You can try to increase how quickly you will take your turn by upgrading your speed, which is the shoe icon. More importantly, you should pay attention to the turn order because if there are two enemies in your range, hovering over them will show who is first in the turn order and who is going to be attacking first. If you eliminate them, then they obviously wont have a turn. Prioritize the enemy that will be attacking first. Even stunning them will make a big difference.

TIP 12 - The Best Offense is a Good Defense

You don’t always need to move on the first turn. Sometimes it makes sense to build up your mana and let the enemies come closer first as they put themselves in striking distance.

TIP 13 - Swiping Items

Sometimes you are just one move away from picking up catnip, health or coins. If you still have a melee attack action, you can use that to swipe into the square by targeting the empty tile. If it’s catnip it might just be enough to allow you to cast another action and take the momentum in battle.

TIP 14 - Check The Breakables

There are often crates and garbage bags littered around the map. When you can, focus on breaking open these items because it’s usually worth it as they can reward you with plenty of money and helpful equipment.
